Considerations When Creating A Long-Distance Parenting Plan

Making a long-distance move to or from New York can be difficult enough, but when you share custody of children, it becomes more complicated. How will you continue to parent your children when you are miles away? It is possible to create a long-distance parenting plan that will work for both you and your children. However, you need to consider certain aspects when creating the plan.

Travel arrangements

You will need to make sure that you are able to visit your children as often as possible. In addition, you should also consider their school schedule and make sure that you can be there for major events.

If your children are older, they may be able to travel on their own. However, you may still need to make sure that they have everything they need when they are away from home.

Communication

It is important to have regular communication with your children, even if you are not able to be there in person. You can call, text or email them as often as you like. Therefore, make sure to include how you intend to communicate in the parenting plan you create as part of the divorce agreement. Make sure to discuss all of the different ways you will be able to communicate with your children so that there are no surprises in your long-distance parenting plan.

Custody agreement

You will need to create an agreement for child support, custody and visitation with your children’s other parent. This will outline who the children will live with and when they will be with the other parent as well as other important details.

If you are not able to agree with your ex, you may need to go to court. However, by creating a parenting plan beforehand, you can often avoid this.

Creating a long-distance parenting plan can be difficult, but it is definitely possible. By considering the different aspects involved, you can create a plan that will work for both you and your children.
