What Can Child Support Be Used To Cover?

When child support is paid, it is intended for certain uses to support the child. Children have the right to financial support from both parents. Tyically, they are entitled to financial support until they are 21 years old. It is helpful for parents to understand what child support is intended to be used for.

What child support is intended to be used for

Child support is intended for the support of the child. It should be used for certain purposes including:

  • The child’s basic necessities;
  • The child’s medical care;
  • Educational fees;
  • College expenses;
  • Extracurricular activities costs;
  • Childcare;
  • Transportation and travel; and
  • Entertainment

Child support should be used to pay for the basic needs of a child, including food, housing and clothing. In some states, however, child support can be used for a more expansive range of purposes. Child support is based on the income of the parents and their ability to pay, the needs of the child and the amount of support needed to maintain the child’s standard of living when possible. It is based on a child support formula that will be used to determine child support that takes into account the number of children in the household.

Noncustodial parents are typically required to make child support payments based on the child’s needs and the parent’s income and to pay for the child’s healthcare and childcare. Child support can be one of the primary concerns for divorcing parents during the divorce process. Because child support is important to parents and children, it is helpful to understand how it is calculated and its intended uses.
